EMS IN UTAH… With only a few exceptions the majority of 911 EMS response in the state is conducted through combined Fire/EMS agencies. Many of these agencies either currently operate as or are transitioning to becoming ALS providers utilizing paramedics.
Training as a paramedic is an excellent way to give one’s self the best possible opportunity to become employed with one of these agencies. In addition to becoming a paramedic, we recommend pursuing firefighter certifications through the State of Utah. There are several methods of obtaining these certifications; however, being directly affiliated with any agency as a paramedic may be one of the better routes.
The State of Utah’s Bureau of EMS has recently transitioned to national certification for paramedics through the NREMT. What this means for you is that you will be expected to meet certain NREMT requirements which are specific to their curriculum and also pass both cognitive and psychomotor evaluations conducted through NREMT.
More information on their testing processes can be found at www.nremt.org.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT?
Class begins the first week of January and ends the first week of December. From day one you will be expected to perform and to learn. The initial months of training are filled with the foundational lectures of paramedicine that will ready you to achieve and gain the most from your clinical experiences. Once deemed ready to enter into the clinical setting by your course coordinator you will begin this adventure with opportunities to gain experience in a variety of in-hospital settings including various ICU’s, labor and delivery and emergency departments from around the valley. Your classroom sessions will continue as normal during these clinical rotations and you will be expected to schedule your clinical training outside of your mandatory classroom activities.
As you finish up your in-hospital rotations you will then prepare to enter into your full-time field experience with one or more of several EMS agencies throughout the Wasatch front. While with these agencies you will be expected to work and perform as a competent EMS professional. During this time you will also be actively preparing to take both your cognitive and written NREMT tests to qualify as a paramedic.
